It’s hard to imagine what 24-year-old Billie Lourd must be going through. The actress lost both her mother, Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher and her grandmother, icon Debbie Reynolds, within one day of one another. While it’s been about six months since their passings, Billie Lourd has still been doing her best to “find the funny” in such a dark point of her life.
After the loss of two such amazing women in her life, Lourd took on one of her mother’s most famous quotes as her new mantra: "If my life weren't funny then it would just be true and that is unacceptable”, according to her Instagram.
She shared a photo of her and her famous mother from when she was a young child, writing: “Finding the funny might take a while but I learned from the best and her voice will forever be in my head and in my heart."
The world was stunned and saddened by the loss of Princess Leia, and then their shock turned to pure heartbreak when Debbie Reynolds passed just a day later. As unbearable as both of these deaths were for their fans, Billie, while still an actress too, is just a regular young girl- one who lost her mom and grandmother in a startlingly short amount of time.
Carrie Fisher’s issues with drug abuse and mental illness were inflamed by her work in the entertainment industry, causing her to be hesitant about letting her daughter follow the same path. However, Lourd has started to make a name for herself after debuting in the hit television show “Scream Queens”. She will also soon be joining the cast of season 7 of “American Horror Story”.
Lourd found true solace in her Scream Queen’s co-star, Taylor Lautner. The actor was by her side through the loss of Reynolds and Fisher, and it was rare to see them apart after they started dating. The two have since gone their separate ways, but Billie’s uncle Todd spoke highly of Lautner and how he treated Billie during such a difficult time for her.
"The truth of the matter is, the guy is pretty spectacular. He's a really deep person, and he has supported her amazingly. He's stepped up and acted like a husband would act. Not that that's what's going on, but it's just an amazing support system for her, and I'm glad he's in her life."
Ultimately, Billie Lourd’s greatest accomplishments in the past 6 months lie within her continued homage she pays to the incredible women in her life. She honored Reynold’s 85th birthday with a “Singin’ In The Rain” tribute, sharing kind words and memories with the Star Wars fan world, and coming to her mother’s defense when Fisher’s autopsy revealed that there were drugs found in her system.
"I know my Mom. She'd want her death to encourage people to be open about their struggles. Seek help, fight for government funding for mental health programs. Shame and those social stigmas are the enemies of progress to solutions and ultimately a cure.”
It’s pretty amazing to see such a young woman stay so strong, eloquent, and loving during such tragedy.
