Chrissy Teigen is the Hollywood best friend we never had, but even she isn’t immune to a little criticism now and then.
Since becoming a mom, Teigen has actually been subject to a slew of unsolicited advice—from being told to hold her baby the “right” way, to being asked to explain why her baby girl doesn’t smile much for photos.
While the 32-year-old supermodel and social media maven has never been one to shy away from her haters, even she gets fed up with the criticism.
Teigen’s latest mom faux pas? Riding down a slide with her daughter!
After sharing a sweet photo of her and her daughter, Luna, on a slide, Teigen—who is expecting her second child with husband John Legend later this year—was slammed with sanctimonious comments from other parents.
One mom commented on the photo: “While I highly doubt Chrissy or anyone else will actually read this, I’m pretty saddened by how many people are making jokes about the broken leg situation. While I didn’t actually see the comment or comments that started this, this did happen to my almost 2 year old son while riding down a slide on my sisters lap. It was shocking to find out how common it was and devastating as a parent to see your child in pain. It was one of my hardest moments as a parent to completely immobilize a highly active 2 year old. No mom shame here because I had no idea at all myself, but it just really isn’t something to joke about like this because it’s very common.”
“I’m about the furthest thing from a professional mom. Probably a pretty crappy one most times, but this happened to my son while riding down a slide on my sisters lap and I saw the whole thing. I thought he was safer that way too and he ended up with toddler fracture. It really is so much more common than people think. Not trying to start anything. I’m just very saddened by everyone making jokes because my son went through 5 weeks of hell because of it,” the same mom later added.
Another commenter wrote: “as Oprah would say- you get a broken leg, you get a broken leg, YOU ALL ARE GETTING BROKEN LEGS!!!!!!”
"Just a heads up that this can break your little one's leg! I have three friends who have had this happen!" one wrote, while another said, "Adults shouldn't slide with a child in their lap. Their legs can get twisted and break. OUCH!"
Teigen, meanwhile, had one of her hilariously witty responses ready to go for all the moms who criticized her parenting choices.
"Wish you guys would have told me about the leg thing earlier. They broke. Both of them. And everyone else's in the park broke too just from watching it happen. There are so many broken legs here (heads up photos are a one second moment in time, I was lifting her onto my lap),” she wrote.
While everything clearly turned out well for Teigen and Luna, there actually is plenty of evidence to back up the claim that it’s risky to hold a child in your lap while riding down a slide.
At the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition, researchers reported that around 352,698 children under the age of six were injured on slides in the U.S. from 2002 to 2015.
The most common injury those researchers found in their report were lower leg fractures, which can occur when a child’s leg gets twisted while riding down a slide on an adult’s lap.
