That has to sting! Months after Mariah Carey and James Packer broke off their engagement in one of the nastiest splits of 2016, the Australian billionaire admits that the entire relationship was a mistake.
In a new interview with Weekend Australia, Packer, 50, is finally opening up about his dramatic split from the “Hero” singer one year after they parted ways—and not on good terms.
“I was at a low point in my personal life,” Packer said about Carey in the interview published Friday, October 20. “She was kind, exciting and fun. Mariah is a woman of substance. But it was a mistake for her and a mistake for me.”
Carey, 47, and Packer had a whirlwind romance, announcing their engagement just a few months after they started dating in 2015.
The pair reportedly had a blowout fight while vacationing in Greece, and sources say Packer ended things right then and there.
At the time, an insider told Us Weekly that Carey was absolutely “blindsided” by the breakup.
“Mariah was totally blindsided by James. She read the news in Woman’s Day Australia that said he dumped her,” the insider told Us. “Mariah knew they were having problems, but all relationships have issues — it wasn’t the kind of thing where she thought she’d read in the paper that she got dumped. She was devastated; she was shocked.”
Despite the embarrassment from the split, Carey and her reps immediately tried to get in front of the rumors by officially announcing the broken engagement first.
”Mariah and James had a fight in Greece, and have not seen each other since. The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah. James is one of the most successful businessmen in the world. They are trying to work it out. Right now, they’re not sure if they will stay together,” the five-time Grammy winner’s rep said at the time.
Although his relationship with Carey ended in disaster, Packer does have an excellent relationship with his previous two exes, Jodhi Meares and Erica Packer.
“I get on exceptionally well with my two ex-wives,” Packer revealed, adding that not fighting harder for his relationship with Meares, the mother of his three children, is one of his greatest regrets in life.
While Packer has been applauded for his candor in this interview, we can’t imagine that Carey is taking the news of being called a “mistake” very well.
