A determined single mother saved her baby’s life when doctors refused to believe that something was seriously wrong with her.
According to The Daily Mail, Baby Penelope was born with a bruised lump on her back that continued to grow and worsen over time.
Although the baby girl’s mother, Emily, repeatedly took Penelope to see a doctor, she was consistently told that her infant was merely suffering from colic, reflux, or constipation.
“Penelope was born with a bruised lump on her back, which became bigger over time,” Emily wrote on a Go Fund Me page set up for her daughter. “I remember constantly feeling that something wasn’t quite right, so I decided to have it checked out.”
“But everywhere I went, nobody would listen to me and I kept getting told that she has reflux, colic, constipation,” she continued.
Finally, back in October, Emily decided to take Penelope to see a local nurse, who was immediately concerned about the lump on the baby girl’s back.
Penelope was quickly rushed to the nearest hospital, where she was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a rare cancerous tumor that affects soft tissue.
By the time she was finally diagnosed, Penelope’s tumor had grown to about 15 centimeters, according to The Daily Mail.
“As Penelope’s tumor is so large, major surgery is required. However, specialists would prefer it to be reduced through chemotherapy,” Emily said.
Now Emily is just hoping the cancer has been caught in time to save Penelope.
“It’s been a rough journey so far and we still have a long road ahead of us,” she said. “I am determined to give my baby girl the best chance at life as I want her to develop and have the same experiences as other infants her age.”
