Dressing little girls up like dolls in heavy makeup and gaudy outfits for beauty pageants is a fad that is often criticized by moms and dads worldwide.
Child beauty pageants have always big a much bigger deal in the U.S. than in other countries. With popular reality shows, like “Toddlers & Tiaras” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” it’s no mystery why these ideas are catching on in the UK.
UK Channel 5 has recently created a documentary, called “Blinging Up Baby,” which reveals how many UK parents are starting to accessorize their children with rhinestones, makeup, glitzy costumes, and even spray tans.
So, how far is too far for these bling-obsessed moms and dads?
One mom in the new documentary is being singled out for her choice to dress her daughter in an extremely controversial costume for an upcoming pageant.
According to 33-year-old Leann, her 4-year-old daughter is going to wow the judges with a unique, rhinestone-studded, bright Hooters costume—handmade by Mom.
“Some people may say it’s controversial, especially the theme I’ve chosen, but at the end of the day, little girls wear swimming costumes to the beach all summer, and that’s not a controlled environment,” Leann says in the documentary. “The environment my kids go in is a controlled environment and it is ticket-entry only.”
Leann even searched for pictures of infamous Hooters Girls online, so she could get the costume just right.
When the pageant finally arrived, many parents were shocked to see such a young girl dancing in a Hooters costume. Some moms called the outfit “fabulous,” but most agreed it was inappropriate for a 4-year-old.
Despite the whispers and snide remarks, Leann looked extremely proud as she watched her little girl dance on stage.
