In a sit-down interview with Howard Stern, Twilight star Robert Pattison dished on everything from dealing with the major success of the franchise films, as well as what he was like as a young boy. The 31-year-old actor did not hold back one bit, and some of his responses were a major surprise.
Pattinson, who has been typically extremely quiet regarding his relationship with singer FKA twigs, admitted that he was “kind of” engaged to the 29-year-old, but has preferred to keep their relationship quiet in order to “protect” both himself and her.
"Basically, for whatever reason with Twilight, I don't know if it's a specific thing with the audience, but there's like a crap troupe of crazies who like think like every single decision you're making is either creating some kind of conspiracy and so, you kind of think, like, to protect it, you kind of think, I want to create a big boundary between it, but it makes it difficult for your actual relationship." he said.
The actor revealed some surprising news about his life as a young boy as well, saying that he used to steal porn magazines and sell them to his classmates!
"No one knew at all what to do with me. I'd sell them for a lot of money...I used to go in and take like one or two and put them in my bag...I was in my school uniform when I was doing it, so it was kind of risky. But, then at the end, I got so cocky that I would take the entire rack and I got caught.” he admitted.
The owner of the store eventually caught Patterson, and went to his school to report the incident. Rob says that all of his friends “snitched” on him.
Rob also reveals that he wasn’t engaging in the healthiest of diets before auditioning for Twilight and frequently enjoyed eating burgers from In-N-Out. The film’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, let the actor know that he’d have to his shirt off multiple times in the film. Upon hearing this, Pattinson thought there was no way he’d land the role.
Speaking of auditioning for Twilight, Rob may have dropped the biggest truth bomb of all when he told Howard Stern that he had taken drugs before his took his shot at playing the film’s lead, vampire Edward Cullen. Pattinson was only 21 at the time of his audition, and was pretty much an unknown actor. His nerves were at an all time high going in, so his agent encouraged him to take half of a Valium to help him relax. When it was time for the follow-up audition, Rob decided to pop a full one. The effects of the Valium made the actor relatively relaxed, but also extremely sleepy.
“I couldn't barely keep my eyes open when I talked to the producers.” he told Stern.
