After waking up to a stomach that made her look like she was six months pregnant, a 16-year-old in the UK learned that she was actually growing a fluid-filled cyst in her belly.
Bethany Lane noticed that her stomach was rapidly growing out of control around Christmas last year, but she didn’t think much of it at first.
After weeks of intense pain, Bethany finally sought medical attention when she collapsed while visiting somebody in the hospital.
By the time Bethany was seen by a doctor, her stomach had swelled to the point that she looked exactly like she was about six months pregnant.
Finally, after several tests, doctors discovered that Bethany had a 13-inch cyst growing on one of her ovaries.
The cyst, which had started pressing on several of Bethany’s vital organs, could have caused serious damage if it had popped.
“It really started to hurt, like someone was stabbing me on my left side,” Bethany told the Gazette Live. “It got so big, it started pressing on the tube between my kidneys and bladder, so one of my kidneys started to fail.”
“And if it had popped, I could have died,” she added.
In fact, had the cyst popped, the fluids inside could have poisoned Bethany’s body, killing her before she could even make it to the hospital.
Luckily, doctors performed a very precise keyhole surgery on Bethany that drained all the fluids inside her cyst just in time.
“I had keyhole surgery to have the cyst removed and only got left with three tiny scars,” Bethany said. “I’m amazed by the results and people should know how amazing doctors are these days.”
“I couldn’t have asked for better doctors, nurses and staff on the ward,” she added.
Immediately after the miraculous surgery, Bethany lost nearly 30 pounds—and that was just two months ago!
“I’m just so grateful. Hospitals sometimes get criticised but I can’t thank them enough,” she said.
