We thought the only thing you could put in a hot glue gun were hot glue sticks, but that’s actually not the case.
This project proves it! Crayons are the perfect size to fit into the slot where a hot glue stick normally goes, and when they’re melted by the heated gun, something amazing happens.
Crayon art has become more popular in recent years. A lot of people like to stick the entire crayons on the canvas and create cool shapes by melting the coloring utensil with a lighter or hair dryer.
But, there’s a better way to melt the crayons and it gives you a little more freedom for making unique designs.
Start by thinking about what you want to make on the canvas and then pick out the colors you’ll need to create it.
Then, get your hot glue gun. A lot of people who have tried this craft warn that using the crayons in the gun can ruin it. Others say it only will if you don’t clean the gun really well afterwards. If you’re concerned about it, use an old gun you don’t mind deeming the “crayon only gun,” or make sure you clean it immediately following the project before the crayon dries.
Once you have a plan, unwrap the first crayon color you want to use and stick it in the gun.
After that you are free to create whatever you want! There aren’t any rules. The further away you hold the gun from the canvas, the more the crayon is going to squirt everywhere, and the less control you’ll have of where it goes.
That worked well for this piece of art, which is more about color than placement.
The reason this is a good alternative to other choices of paint types is because once it dries, the crayon creates a cool texture that adds a little dimension to the canvas and allows the colors to really pop.
It can get a little messy, so make sure you’re working in an area that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
Once you’re done, the last step is to let it dry and find a spot to hang it up!
